History of the Farm

In the early 1970's Richard Downing Sr. and his sons began a hobby farm on the family property in Massachusetts.  The farm raised Herefords, and when space became an issue in the mid-1980's, the herd was moved to a new farm location on Darling Hill Road in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.  In 1995, the family bought their first Belties, and were very pleased with how the breed thrived in their northern Vermont home.  With the promotion of Mr. Downing's son, Steve Downing, to the position of Herd Manager in 2001, the decision was made to concentrate exclusively on Belted Galloways.  Their goal was to increase the herd size to approximately 100-150 head, and to introduce new all-natural feeding and breeding programs that would produce an excellent beef product and strong genetic lines while supporting a low stress, natural environment for the cattle.  Today, this vision is a reality at Meadow View Farm.

Being a Good Neighbor

Meadow View Farm is a proud member of the greater New England farming community as well as the local community of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.  For this reason, Meadow View farm is active in several associations, including the Belted Galloway Society and the New England Galloway Group.  Locally, Meadow View Farm volunteers to work with local youth in 4-H programs.  These programs not only introduce students to the importance of farming, but also instill them with confidence and personal pride in their hard work.
